Riley Fields is a former employee of Mecklenburg Parks and Recreation Department, and is currently the Director of Community Relations for the Carolina Panthers. During his employment at the County, Riley was responsible for several important items involving kids’ athletics programs and facilities. Riley was responsible for working with the Carolina Panthers to get several NFL charities grants to build artificial surface football fields in Mecklenburg and surrounding counties. He also started the “Sir Purr Bowl” in 2000 while working with the county, which involves competition to get to play a “demonstration football” game during one of the Panthers half times. The “Sir Purr Bowl” has been played at half time in a Panthers game for the past 23 years, and brought a new emphasis on youth football in both Carolinas. During his time with the Panthers, Riley has been involved in working with numerous nonprofit organizations, helping them to get grants.

Elaine believes that citizen engagement, active listening and collaboration are the best ways to make well-informed, healthy decisions for our community.
NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION AWARD
NC Wildlife Great Outdoors University
Great Outdoors University (GoU) is a conservation-based experiential education program created by the National Wildlife Federation and North Carolina Wildlife Federation (NCWF) to bring outdoor adventures to kids of all ages who have limited opportunities to explore the natural world.
GoU breaks down the existing barriers in the greater Charlotte region providing kids the chance to step into the magnificent outdoors and have fun learning in a living laboratory filled with inspiration and wonderful surprises. We have curriculum options aligned with the standards that bring science, technology, engineering and math to life igniting curiosity, excitement and awe in ways that encourage continued learning and environmental stewardship.
GoU takes a collaborative approach utilizing the strength of NCWF affiliate resources and forming alliances with community partners. This collaborative approach capitalizes on the existing strengths and resources in our community and augments these resources to provide a critical need to the greater Charlotte Region. All at no cost to the participants.
Kids learn the importance of conserving special places for wildlife and have the chance to gain new skills, build self-confidence, mentor with positive role models and experience teamwork and hands-on problem solving.
For many kids, a GoU experience is the first time they’ve had a chance to connect with the great outdoors – whether it’s exploring a lake by canoe, learning to fish, observing wildlife up close, romping through the woods or exploring streams.

Abilities Unlimited of the Carolinas Formed in June 2005 by three fathers of children with physical disabilities in the greater Charlotte area, the mission of Abilities Unlimited (AUCarolinas.org) is to provide organized athletic programs that will compete regionally and nationally in wheelchair basketball, wheelchair track and field, wheelchair softball, and swimming, as well as facilitating participation in a variety of outdoor sports (archery, fishing, water-skiing, equestrian, etc.). It has become one of the most respected programs in the country, attracting families from both Carolinas and even southern Virginia for the opportunities it provides, not only to enjoy and benefit from the lessons and camaraderie of team sports in the present but also going forward. Close to a dozen young athletes from the Charlotte Jr. Rollin' Hornets (basketball) and Carolina Cruisers (track & field) have gone on to compete on the university level on scholarship, with several representing the United States on Paralympic, World Championship, and Parapan American Games teams. AU has grown to now field three junior and two adult wheelchair basketball teams and works diligently to broaden the awareness of its programs to families who do not know that these athletic opportunities exist for their children. PROJECT RECOGNITION AWARD
The Sportsplex at Matthews The Sportsplex at Matthews is an athletic facility that consists of 9 synthetic turf fields, 2 grass fields and a 2,500 seat grass stadium. All fields are multi-purpose fields that can accommodate a variety of sports; soccer, lacrosse, football, field hockey, rugby, etc. The Stadium has a two story field house with home, away, and referee locker rooms. The top floor of the field house is a 90-person conference room that is available to rent. The Sportsplex also has two playgrounds and roughly 2 miles of paved trails. The venue has been more than a decade in the making, as Mecklenburg County hired Woolpert in the mid-2000s to plan and design the Sportsplex at Matthews, and the grand opening of the expansion was celebrated in June of 2017. "We wanted to design a SportsPlex for all ages, from the young kid learning how to play to the professional level. Young players are going to be able to experience what the pros experience, and do so on the same field. That’s a win no matter the score." - Andrew Pack of Woolpert CORPORATE RECOGNITION AWARD

Their willingness to sponsor programs and facilities in this region has been very valuable. Novant Health also provided the EMTs and Sports Trainers for the 2016 US Paralympic Trials held in Charlotte and hosted by Partners for Parks as their donation to the event. Novant Health Sports Medicine has partnered with a variety of teams, programs, community groups and organizations to provide medical care and services to participants at numerous events. They have had the opportunity to partner in Mecklenburg County with 7 high schools and 2 private high schools and all of the high schools in Union County. Healing Communities Through Play – Druid Hills Neighborhood Park Playground Build
Please Join Partners for Parks, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, Cunningham Recreation & The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Metro Division for the “Healing Communities Through Play” Playground Build

Noon – 4pm (Shift 2)
Druid Hills Neighborhood Park, 2801 Poinsett Street, Charlotte, NC 28206
Parking is available on site. Lunch will be served.
Background Story
The Druid Hills Neighborhood Park playground was scheduled to be replaced... but now it’s being supersized. Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, Partners for Parks and Cunningham Recreation pooled their resources to truly enhance the park.
Cunningham Recreation has launched a new initiative entitled “Healing Communities Through Play”. The initiative focuses on bringing county/city leadership, law enforcement officers, residents and youth together to cooperatively build play and fitness spaces that will benefit the entire community. Cunningham Recreation will be donating a portion of the new playground along with picnic tables and benches to the park.
Partners for Parks has dedicated funds raised for the past two years to the Druid Hills Neighborhood Park.
With the help of the Neighborhood, CMPD Metro Division, Cunningham Recreation and YOU we will build the playground, mend fences and create walkways. Our efforts will be a great addition to the new community garden and our multi-generational fitness areas.
