July is Park and Recreation Month — a nationwide celebration honoring the park and recreation professionals and volunteers nationwide who make our parks vibrant, welcoming and essential. For Partners for Parks, this month is an opportunity to shighlight the many ways parks strengthen Charlotte’s communities.
The Power of Connection
Parks are where relationships grow, cultures meet and, communities bond. More than 227 million U.S. adults visited a local park or recreation facility between August 2024 and September 2025, a powerful reminder that parks are among the most valued public services.
In Charlotte, our parks host festivals, farmers markets, neighborhood gatherings and intergenerational programs that bring people together. Nationally, 91% of park and recreation agencies offer themed special events, and 22% manage farmers markets, reflecting what we see locally: people crave shared experiences.
Partners for Parks continues to support spaces and programs that strengthen community ties, from greenway expansions to volunteer-driven park improvements.
The Power of Play
Play fuels creativity, joy and lifelong learning. Across the country, park and recreation agencies reach more than 40 million youth each year, with 92% offering youth sports programs that build confidence and character.
Charlotte’s parks are home to playgrounds, youth sports leagues, summer camps and out‑of‑school programs that give children safe, enriching places to grow. With one playground per 3,737 residents nationwide, these spaces are essential for healthy childhood development.
Play is not just fun, it’s foundational. It shapes how young people learn, connect and thrive.
The Power of Community
Public spaces offer room for everyone to gather, celebrate and heal. In 2021, U.S. park and recreation agencies generated $201 billion in economic activity and supported 1.1 million jobs, demonstrating that parks are not just amenities, they are engines of community vitality.
Nearly two in three adults strongly agree that parks are an important local government service, and 63% say proximity to parks matters when choosing where to live. Charlotte’s rapid growth reflects this reality: parks make neighborhoods stronger, healthier and more desirable.
Partners for Parks champions projects that expand access to these shared spaces, ensuring every resident can enjoy the benefits of community-centered parks.
The Power of Nature
Nature restores and inspires us, and parks ensure everyone can access its benefits. Park and recreation leaders nationwide prioritize sustainability: planting trees, transitioning to native plants, retrofitting buildings and managing stormwater through green infrastructure.
Healthcare providers increasingly recommend nature-based activities for physical and mental health, especially for parents, Gen Z and millennials. Charlotte’s parks offer trails, gardens, waterways and green spaces that support wellness for all ages.
Most agencies (85%) also play a critical role in preparing for and responding to natural disasters, a responsibility Charlotte’s park professionals take seriously as our region faces more severe weather events.
The Power of Belonging
Welcoming parks make every person feel valued. Nearly all survey respondents (99%) report feeling a sense of belonging in park spaces, and 72% feel safe in their local parks.
Charlotte’s parks offer inclusive programs for older adults, youth, families and newcomers. With 92% of agencies offering older adult resources, parks help reduce social isolation and promote connection across generations.
Partners for Parks supports initiatives that ensure every park is a place where people feel welcome, regardless of age, background or ability.
Why this Matters for Charlotte
Park and Recreation Month is more than a celebration, it’s a reminder of the essential role parks play in our region’s health, resilience and identity. Charlotte’s parks are places to play, gather, restore, celebrate and connect. They are made possible by dedicated staff, volunteers, community partners and supporters like you.
Partners for Parks is committed to uplifting the Power Of Parks and Recreation every day, not just in July, by advocating for equitable access, supporting park improvements and championing the people who make our parks thrive.
