What started as a small gathering of 50 to 60 corgis racing across the outfield of a softball field has grown into one of the largest corgi racing events in the country.
On October 17, 2026, hundreds of spectators, racers, volunteers, vendors, and sponsors gathered for the Charlotte Corgi Club Racing Championship, creating an unforgettable day filled with excitement, laughter, and plenty of adorable chaos. This year’s event attracted corgis not only from the Charlotte area, but also from South Carolina, Long Island, Michigan, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, Maryland, and even California, demonstrating how this uniquely Charlotte tradition has become a destination event for corgi enthusiasts nationwide.
The event continues to grow each year, and organizers are always looking for new ways to improve the experience for competitors and spectators alike. One of the biggest enhancements in 2026 was the addition of professional photo-finish timing technology. Thanks to the support of Partners for Parks and Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, racers benefited from an upgraded, digitalized timing system that brought a new level of excitement and accuracy to the competition.
The investment paid off dramatically. One of the closest races of the day was decided by just .001 seconds, a finish so close that only professional photo-finish technology could determine the winner. The addition of professional timing elevated the event and provided a memorable experience for participants and fans alike.
The Charlotte Corgi Club expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made the event possible, from attendees and volunteers to vendors, sponsors, and community partners. Their message was simple: “It takes a village.” The overwhelming support from the community is what allows the event to continue growing year after year.
Beyond the racing, the event also continued its tradition of giving back. The championship raffle raised $650, with 100 percent of the proceeds donated to Forgotten, Now Family Rescue, helping support dogs in need throughout the community.
Partners for Parks is proud to support events like the Charlotte Corgi Race that bring people together, activate public spaces, and create memorable experiences for residents and visitors alike. From its humble beginnings in a softball field outfield to becoming a nationally recognized event, the Charlotte Corgi Race showcases the power of community partnerships, creative programming, and a shared love for four-legged fun.
We are grateful to play a small role in helping this beloved event continue to grow and look forward to seeing what exciting additions race organizers dream up next year.
